Tutankhamun, or better known as King Tut, was a pharaoh in the 18th dynasty. He didn't always have this name however. Tut was born with the name Tutankhaten. His father, Akhenaten, gave him that name to worship Aten, the sun disk. Akhenaten had changed the polytheistic religion of Egypt into a monotheism, only allowing worship Aten. The Egyptian people didn't like this because it took away the religion which they based their entire lives upon. To gain back the trust of the people, Tut changed his name to Tutankhamun or "Tut the follower of Amun. Although this decision reunited Egypt, strengthened the economy, and got support back, there were no other notable achievements made by Tut, so why is he so famous? This answer can be attributed to the discovery of his tomb and his vast treasure.
King Tut’s tomb was one of the most important archeological discoveries in 19th century and possibly history. It was discovered by Howard Carter on November 4, 1922 in the Valley of the Kings . For the first time, a tomb which was almost perfectly intact had been discovered without being robbed. The tomb revealed an amazing culture which may have been lost without him. Had Tut not made the decision to bring back the polytheistic religion, all evidence of the Egyptian's elaborate culture and religion prior to Akhenaten may have been forgotten forever.
